Best Sunset Spots in Maui
Maui faces west across the Auau Channel toward Lanai and the open Pacific. On a clear evening, the sky runs through a sequence -- gold, orange, pink, violet -- over the silhouettes of Lanai and Molokai on the horizon. Finding the right perch matters. Here are the spots worth the effort.
The Lanai at Unit 711 (No Drive Required)
Staying at Maui Sands Seaside gives you a 35-foot west-facing private lanai directly above the water. The sun sets directly over the Auau Channel, dropping behind Lanai and sometimes, on the clearest evenings, visible as a green flash just below the horizon. In whale season (December through April), humpbacks frequently breach against the orange light. There is nowhere on the island where you have this view with a drink in hand in your own space. This is the one sunset spot that requires zero planning.
Makena State Park (Big Beach)
Big Beach faces southwest along a wide, unobstructed stretch of shore. The lack of buildings, resort lighting, or any development to the west makes for a clean horizon. The beach slopes toward the water at a good angle for watching the sun touch the ocean. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to stake out a spot. It gets busy in high season but remains one of the most scenic sunset beaches on the island.
Kihei Boat Ramp
The public boat ramp at the north end of South Kihei Road sits directly at the water's edge with a wide western exposure. No amenities, no crowds competing for the same limited view. Walk down from the parking area, find a rock to sit on, and watch the sun set with nobody selling you anything. In winter, whale spouts show up in the golden light offshore.
McGregor Point Lighthouse
The small lighthouse at the north end of Maalaea Bay is a local favorite for sunset watching in whale season. The point juts into the channel and gives an unobstructed 180-degree view from south Maui to the West Maui Mountains. Humpbacks frequent this area from December through April, and watching them breach as the sun goes down is one of those Maui experiences that stays with you. Park at the small lot on Honoapiilani Highway and walk to the point.
Best seat on the island is in the unit
Unit 711's 35-foot west-facing lanai gives you an unobstructed open-ocean sunset every evening. No driving, no competition for a view. Molokai and Lanai on the horizon.
Check availabilityLahaina Harbor Area
The harbor at Lahaina sits on the west side of Maui with the island of Lana'i directly offshore about nine miles out. The harbor front has open water views and the town behind it -- though Lahaina has changed since the 2023 fire -- still brings life and foot traffic that can make a sunset feel like an event. Sunset dinner at one of the harbor-facing restaurants is a popular choice. Worth the 45-minute drive from Kihei at least once.
The West Maui Coast (Driving North from Kihei)
The drive north along Honoapiilani Highway from Maalaea to Lahaina and on to Kapalua passes a series of pull-offs with progressively wider ocean views. Any of the roadside parking areas between Ukumehame and Olowalu give clean western exposures. The south-facing direction of the road means you are driving into the sunset as you head north in the late afternoon -- worth timing intentionally if you are making the drive.
Sunset from the Water
Sunset sailing and dinner cruises are a reliable option from Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina. You are on the water as the sun drops below the horizon -- which gives you a different vantage point than any shore spot. Trilogy's Lanai snorkel and sunset sail is one of the better-reviewed options. Book at least a day in advance.
